Innes common
The best time for ballooning is in the early morning just after sunrise. The inflation process generally takes 15-30 minutes and once airborne, the balloons are expected to be in the air between one to two hours. Balloons fly in very light or no wind and dry weather.
Although a fair indication will be given the night prior to each flight, flying can only be confirmed on the day. If weather is favourable, all the balloons will fly from the main venue at Innes Common, Hamilton, each morning.

Did you know Balloons Over Waikato is a competition too?
At Balloons Over Waikato, pilots compete in exciting daily challenges, showcasing their skill in navigating the skies. Here’s how the competition unfolds:
- Three main prizes are up for grabs, with tasks set each morning by our Flight Director based on weather conditions and wind direction.
- Balloons will fly towards designated target zones where a large cross or another marker is set up.
- Pilots will throw small sandbags (baggies) towards the target, aiming to get as close as possible. Each baggy is numbered to match a specific balloon team. A friendly reminder: if you come across a beanbag with a long, ribbon-like tail, leave it alone – it’s a valuable point for a pilot! Email us if found after hours.
- Our official scorers measure the distance from the target to determine how well each pilot performed.
With tasks changing daily, no two mornings are the same! Keep an eye on the skies and see if your favourite balloon hits the mark.
